    The Wait is Over

Palm needed a miracle, and it needed it fast.

Palm's preliminary quarter-end results show drooping revenues, bleak outlook
Palm axes an undisclosed amount of employees, sort of blames itself
Analyst says Palm burning through cash like it's going out of style

Die-hard palm fans like me have always been here for Palm, through troughs and peaks.

I can't think of any other consumer electronics brand having so many ardent and loyal followers (maybe other than Apple), even when it repeatedly disappoint its supporters for so many years:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really really want to believe. I have been hurt so many times before.
    -------

I know it is going to be difficult for palm to recover but

GO PALM GO!! I'm rooting for you!!

    -----
    Dear Palm,

There are some, like me, who were loyal to you, who had hopes and dreams for you.

I've watch you crash, and burn, and then burn some more.

Here is your chance, (or maybe it's more of a moment) to make some of us blink twice.

So, Palm, please don't screw this up.

Otherwise you'll be back in the pit and this time we'll use napalm.

PS. It'd better be a phone, and have actual freakin' keys.

-Your fans (all 9 of us.)

    ----------------

when I think of Palm, I have the following emotions:

nostalgia - good thoughts about my Palm III for what it did during its time
appreciation - for what it's done to initiate the smartphone concept
frustration - for staying essentially the same for over a decade
hope - that they will survive and innovate again.

    I'm rooting for you.

    --------------

I'm cheering for Palm too! I just hope the wait was worth it

    ----

For myself, I'm rooting for Palm for the fact that before there was the iPhone, before Google was a household word, and when RIM was looking as though it wouldn't last, there was Palm. Palm was the gadget, Palm was the tool, Palm was in your pocket and ready to work. I was a die-hard Palm user (my last unit was the Treo600). Lack of innovation and them selling out (of their OS and to MS) sent me running to something else. So I hope that they come out with some "Palm New-ness" that makes people reconsider their options for a handheld computing device.

    -------------------

I will always have a soft spot for Palm in my heart. Let's hope they do some good.

    ----
Really hoping they can pull off a comeback.

    -------
I miss my old Palm apps...Going to dig out my Tungsten T tonight and see if it'll still charge.

    ---------
We're expecting an Epiphany here, Palm.

Having sold off your important bits (OS, Desktop) to those who didn't / haven't given a flying f*ck (PalmSource - then sold to ACCESS), prostituted yourselves to build

indifferent and just plain dodgy hardware for wireless companies while ignoring your original fan base and then continued to promise us the world and consistently given us a

lump of coal instead, you'll have to pull off a Miracle here.

Palm New-ness, huh? Someone else's OS with even less functionality, using a dinky screen, in a smartphone built by Asus, more like.

Still, feel free to supply us with a Miracle, Palm...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At CES on 2009 Jan 9, the wait is over.

Palm finally delivers with Palm Pre and WebOS.

Gizmodo 说Palm Pre 是maybe the most important handset to be announced in two

    years.

    Well done, Palm.

This thing is so ahead of its competition that it completely changed the rules of the game.
Eat your heart out, Apple! Palm is back! Back in the game.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Engadget

man this is absolutely awesome! way to not disappoint! wait...disappoint?! hell you far exceeded expectations! way to go palm!
    -----

yeah, i had absolutely NO expectations for Palm, and they just set this bitch on fire! If i didn't already have an iPhone I would probably be hotly anticipating this!
    ------

Same here. I'm a long time Palm user, since the day of the old Palmpilots (US Robotics) but have been continuously disappointed with Palm as time goes on. I'm a berry user

now but this phone looks awesome and I hope Palm does well from it. Innovations were what's lacking from Palm in the later years and this phone is an example of them doing

    something about it. Awesome!

    ------

A relevant product? From Palm? What is this, 1998? I'm impressed so far.

    -----
Wow...palm hit this one out of the ball park. Great OS. Great Web Browser.

    ------

As a huge Android supporter and G1 owner...

HOLY CRAP! Palm, you totally blew my mind. This thing is unbelievable. They are the first company to really sit down and look at what people really wanted, and deliver on it

totally without holding back some critical feature.

As a software developer, I'm eager to learn more about the SDK. He keeps talking about how the programs are made in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, but I'm really hoping that's an

option IN ADDITION TO genuine binary apps. Surely nobody is going to write an NES emulator in Javascript, there has to be an abillity to write native apps.

Once again, huge congratulations to Palm on this one. Everybody thought they had the 2009 smartphone competition all figured out, but Palm just turned the whole industry

upside down. I can't wait to see what happens next.

    --------------

the Pre reminds me of the cute fancy robot in Wall-e, and it makes all other phone look like wall-e

good job Palm! what a comeback! From single threaded OS on death bed, to this.

    ------
This is a dream come true. Like the iPhone, but with messaging emphasized more than media and on Sprint! I just might cry I'm so elated right now.

    ---------

Palm ushers us into a whole new era with this phone.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Palm Pre

High-speed wireless (EV-DO Rev. A or HSDPA, depending on version)
    802.11b / g WiFi
    Integrated GPS
    3.1-inch 24-bit color 480 x 320 display
    Dedicated gesture area below display
    Slide-out portrait QWERTY keyboard
Exchange email support in addition to POP and IMAP
    IM, MMS, and SMS messaging
    High-performance browser
3-megapixel camera with LED flash and "extended depth of field"
    3.5mm headphone jack
    Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP
    8GB of internal storage
    USB mass storage mode
    MicroUSB connectivity with USB 2.0
Proximity sensor for detecting when phone is near face
Light sensor to automatically dim display
    Ringer mute switch
    Removable rechargeable battery
    59.57 x 100.53 x 16.95mm closed
    4.76 ounces

Palm is never about hardware superiority而是它的实用性和人性化。
Palm conference video, this thing completely blew the audience away. http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pre/index.html

      http://i.gizmodo.com/5126702/palm-pre-preview-simply-amazing

    http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/palm-pre-in-depth-impressions-video-and-huge-hands-on-gallery

    A: 2009 is THE year.

。。i thought it doesn't get any worse than 2008....

the pictures of the long-rumored Treo 850 have finally surfaced online. And it's certainly the best-looking Treo ever!!!

it seems the device runs windows mobile. it would be even better if it runs on Palm OS ( a new version of course, if there will ever be one). But still, the form factor of this new babe alone is enough reason for me to loosen my purse string.

    here are the specs:

    - Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
    - 400 MHz processor
    - ROM capacity: 256 MiB (accessible: 175 MiB)

    ok, something else.

。beyond recognition)

。套用teammate的话就是a very healthy effort with an extremely unhealthy ending. 好吧,reminds me of my recent little weight problem....

    map

I didn't have a beard when I came in this morning.".....

    明天是Vishal的last day 了
    后天是WY的last day

What do you want from us?

When we were called “sick man of Asia”, we were called peril.
When we billed to be the next superpower, we re called the threat

When we closed our doors, you smuggled drugs to open markets.
when we embrace free trade, you blame us for taking away your jobs.

when we re falling apart, you marched in your troops and wanted your fair share.
when we re putting the broken pieces together, “Free T*b*t” you screamed!
    “it was invasion.”

So we tried communism, you hated us for being communist.
So we embraced capitalism, you hate us for being capitalist,

Then we have a billion people, you said we re destroying the planet.
Then we limit our numbers, you said it was human rights abuses.

When we were poor, you think we re dogs,
When we loan you cash, you blamed us for your debts.

When we build our industries, you called us polluters.
When we sell you goods, you blamed us for global warming,
When we buy oil, you called that exploitation and genocide.

When we were lost in chaos and rampage, you wanted rule s of laws for us.
When we uphold law and order against violence, you called that violation of human rights.

When we were silent, you said you want us to have free speech.
When we were silent no more, you say we were brainwashed.

Why do you hate us so much? We asked. “No”. You answered, “we don t hate you”.
We don t hate you either Bud, do you understand us?? “of course we do”, you said, “We have CNN, BBC, and CBC”.

But why, we still feel, your western people are not happy with us.
What do you really want from us??

When we were silent, you said you want us to have free speech.
When we were silent no more, you say we were brainwashed.

Why do you hate us so much? We asked. “No”. You answered, “we don t hate you”.
We don t hate you either Bud, do you understand us?? “of course we do”, you said, “We have CNN, BBC, and BBC”.

But why, we still feel, your western people are not happy with us.
What do you really want from us??
my friend, What do you really want from us??

    The Demise of Bear Stearns

Timeline of events leading to the cut price sale of an American icon.

    JUNE 22 2007
Bear Stearns commits $3.2bn in secured loans to bail out one of its hedge funds. It says its troubles are 'relatively contained'.

    JULY 17
Bear Stearns reveals that one of its hedge funds has lost all of its value. Another worth 9 per cent of its value at the end of April.

    AUGUST 5
Co-president Warren Spector resigns after the collapse of the two exposed hedge funds. He was seen as the favourite to succeed chief executive Jimmy Cayne.

    AUGUST 17
Bear Stearns slashes 240 jobs in two mortgage origination units. In early October, the bank culls over 300 more jobs.

    OCTOBER 22
Bears Stearns secures a share-swap deal with Citic, China's largest securities firm. Citic pays $1bn for about 6 per cent stake in Bear Stearns. The US bank agrees to eventually pay the same for about 2 per cent of Citic.

    NOVEMBER 1
A US newspaper suggests that Cayne was out of touch during the collapse of the two hedge funds. He dismisses the media concerns as "noise".

    DECEMBER 7
Joe Lewis, Bahamas-based billionaire, up his stake to 8 per cent, showing that he believes the Bear Stearns shares are undervalued.

    DECEMBER 20
The bank reports its first-ever quarterly loss. The loss is nearly four times analysts' forecasts, and includes a $1.9bn writedown on its holdings of mortgage assets.

    JANUARY 7 2008
CEO Cayne retires under pressure, but stays on as non-executive chairman. Alan Schwartz becomes president and chief executive.

    FEBRUARY 14
In reaction to the fall in the bank's share price since the share-swap deal, it emerges that Citic has been renegotiating the agreement.

    FEBRUARY 28
Rebel investors in Bear Stearns seize two of the bank's failed hedge funds in an attempt to regain some of the $1.6bn lost in the previous summer's collapse.

    MARCH 7
Carlyle Capital Corporation sees its shares suspended in Amsterdam.

The $22bn hedge fund suffered exposure to mortgage backed securities, and had received substantial additional margin calls and default notices from its lenders.

Bear Stearns is seen as heavily exposed to Carlyle Group, founder and 15 per cent owner of CCC.

    MARCH 13
CCC collapses. Bear Stearns shares fall 17 per cent as investors grow anxious about its exposure to CCC. Schwartz comments: "Our balance sheet is not weakened at all."

    MARCH 14
JP Morgan and the New York Federal Reserve rush to the rescue of Bear Stearns. Shares crash almost 50 per cent.

    MARCH 16
JP Morgan agrees to buy Bear Stearns in a deal that values the stricken bank's shares at $2 each, with JP Morgan exchanging 0.05473 of each of its shares for one Bear share.

JP Morgan snaps up Bear Sterns for $200 million.

两天前,BEAR改口说,our financial positions has significantly deteriorated over the last 24 hours.

This transaction represents the best outcome for all of our constituencies based upon the current circumstances,I am incredibly proud of our employees and believe they will continue to add tremendous value to the new enterprise.”

Bear Stearns

Bear Stearns

Bear Stearns

    宣称Impatience is a virtue的Bear Stearns

Bear Stearns

    UBS? Merrill?SocGen?

    and the list goes on.

But this is finance: make one mistake and you are history.

    A Message by George Carlin

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

         A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

    AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

    entry from iphone

from today, MSN spaces has implemented a mobile version, making my access from iPhone a lot easier. after sending my laptop back home, I had to live with my umcoooperatively broken down desk-top and squint at my iPhone screen whenever I feel like a dose of Internet.

actually I am beginning tobit used to this kind of simple life. minimum Internet gives me time to do what I should have been doing

MSN spaces sucks!!!!)

    4. 做工太他妈的精美了,makes any other phone looks like a cheapie.
    6. Steve JobsiPhone is the best iPod ever.
    8. Google MapsSafariYoutubeeMail…With wifiiphone offers capabilities beyond imagination. Plus, everything just work so smoothly. Isn't that how the ideal life is supposed to be?

Screw u Steve Jobs!

After all, when a smaller-than-treo650-and-thinner-than-MOTO V3 sized cute and sexy mobile device gives you:

iPod + phone + internet browsing

      3.5 inch touchscreen

      OS X

      2 MegaPixel camera

      Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

      BlueTooth

      EDGE

      Quad-Band GSM

And most importantly, groundbreaking user experience

What more can you ask for?

    Bose TriPort

Invention Of the Year: The iPhone (Time Magazine)

Stop. I mean, don't stop reading this, but stop thinking what you're about to think. Or, O.K., I'll think it for you:

The thing is hard to type on. It's too slow. It's too big. It doesn't have instant messaging. It's too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it's too cheap!) It doesn't support my work e-mail. It's locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—we're sick of hearing about it! Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons:

    1. The iPhone is pretty
Most high-tech companies don't take design seriously. They treat it as an afterthought. Window-dressing. But one of Jobs' basic insights about technology is that good design is actually as important as good technology. All the cool features in the world won't do you any good unless you can figure out how to use said features, and feel smart and attractive while doing it.

An example: look at what happens when you put the iPhone into "airplane" mode (i.e., no cell service, WiFi, etc.). A tiny little orange airplane zooms into the menu bar! Cute, you might say. But cute little touches like that are part of what makes the iPhone usable in a world of useless gadgets. It speaks your language. In the world of technology, surface really is depth.

    2. It's touchy-feely
apple didn't invent the touchscreen. Apple didn't even reinvent it (Apple probably acquired its much hyped multitouch technology when it snapped up a company called Fingerworks in 2005). But Apple knew what to do with it. Apple's engineers used the touchscreen to innovate past the graphical user interface (which Apple helped pioneer with the Macintosh in the 1980s) to create a whole new kind of interface, a tactile one that gives users the illusion of actually physically manipulating data with their hands—flipping through album covers, clicking links, stretching and shrinking photographs with their fingers.

This is, as engineers say, nontrivial. It's part of a new way of relating to computers. Look at the success of the Nintendo Wii. Look at Microsoft's new Surface Computing division. Look at how Apple has propagated its touchscreen interface to the iPod line with the iPod Touch. Can it be long before we get an iMac Touch? A TouchBook? Touching is the new seeing.

    3. It will make other phones better
jobs didn't write the code inside the iPhone. These days he doesn't dirty his fingers with 1's and 0's, if he ever really did. But he did negotiate the deal with AT&T to carry the iPhone. That's important: one reason so many cell phones are lame is that cell-phone-service providers hobble developers with lame rules about what they can and can't do. AT&T gave Apple unprecedented freedom to build the iPhone to its own specifications. Now other phone makers are jealous. They're demanding the same freedoms. That means better, more innovative phones for all.

    4. It's not a phone, it's a platform
when apple made the iphone, it didn't throw together some cheap-o bare-bones firmware. It took OS X, its full-featured desktop operating system, and somehow squished it down to fit inside the iPhone's elegant glass-and-stainless-steel case. That makes the iPhone more than just a gadget. It's a genuine handheld, walk-around computer, the first device that really deserves the name. One of the big trends of 2007 was the idea that computing doesn't belong just in cyberspace, it needs to happen here, in the real world, where actual stuff happens. The iPhone gets applications like Google Maps out onto the street, where we really need them.

And this is just the beginning. Platforms are for building on. Last month, after a lot of throat-clearing, Apple decided to open up the iPhone, so that you—meaning people other than Apple employees—will be able to develop software for it too. Ever notice all that black blank space on the iPhone's desktop? It's about to fill up with lots of tiny, pretty, useful icons.

    5. It is but the ghost of iPhones yet to come
the iphone has sold enough units—more than 1.4 million at press time—that it'll be around for a while, and with all that room to develop and its infinitely updatable, all-software interface, the iPhone is built to evolve. Look at the iPod of six years ago. That monochrome interface! That clunky touchwheel! It looks like something a caveman whittled from a piece of flint using another piece of flint. Now imagine something that's going to make the iPhone look that primitive. You'll have one in a few years. It'll be very cool. And it'll be even cheaper.

    iPhone or N95
